Sarah Grimke is the middle daughter. The one her mother calls 'difficult' and her father calls 'remarkable'. On Sarah's eleventh birthday, Hetty 'Handful' Grimke is taken from the slave quarters she shares with her mother, wrapped in lavender ribbons, and presented to Sarah as a gift.
Sarah knows that what she does next will unleash a world of trouble. She also knows that she cannot accept control over another human's life as a birthday gift. And so, indeed, the trouble begins ...

This book was everywhere and no matter what comment I read they where all raving about how beautiful this was and that one should read it. Combined with a very pretty cover it was not hard to be convinced to read this.
Now my while writing my review I realize I only want to gush about how beautifully written this book is which will obviously not add anything more than what others said already.
Both Handful and Sarah's story are great to read. They have their own voice. Knowing that Sarah's story is based on true stories and research in books including her own diary gives an extra edge to all the awful things happening to the slaves.
This book is about strong willed woman. Wanting to change their lives for the better. I must admit that the men in the story do become the victim of the strong woman. They seem to be very aggressive and never bother about the woman. Though I understand the point of view I had a hard time believing that all man are that awful.
